Students named recipients of ABA Scholarships each receive $2,500 to be applied to tuition as they pursue degrees in broadcast communications. Scholarships are paid in one lump sum at the ABA's Annual Convention.

Two of the ten awards are earmarked for broadcast engineering students and two are earmarked for students with an interest in broadcast sales. The scholarship program allows students at two year institutions to apply for scholarships.

ABA scholarships are named for Bert Bank, Julius Talton, Dewey Harold "Buck" Long, Jr., Bob Robinson, Sr., Jim Stewart, Harry Mabry, Clyde Price and Mike Travis.

How To Apply Eligibility Requirements

Applicants should meet the following criteria:

  • Must be legal resident of Alabama and must apply personally
  • Must be pursuing a major or minor course of study in broadcasting/communications
  • Must be attending any two or four-year Alabama college or university
  • Must demonstrate the intention of entering broadcast communication as his/her life’s work
  • Must be a rising junior or senior if attending a four year college or university.
  • Must not have received any ABA scholarships in the past
  • Maintain a grade point average of 3.0 on a 4 point scale or equivalent
  • Submit a letter from the department head certifying that the applicant has a reasonable chance of successfully completing the course of instruction.

    Judges will consider depth of thought, clarity of expression and commitment to broadcasting as primary factors. Extracurricular activities and community involvement also will be considered. No applicant will be denied on the basis of race, color, religion, national origin, sex or age. All students are encouraged to apply.
